Another Championship in the Books: Sammy and the Burmans Shine in Delco League
ASTON – Saturday was a day to remember for Sammy Burman. Not only did he help Upper Darby secure a second straight Delco League championship, but he also shared series MVP honors with teammate Gus Wright. The win was a full family affair — Sammy celebrated with his dad, Marty (the team’s first-base coach), his brother Alex (on the field), and retired brother Leo (on the bench).
The Blue Sox capped their season with an 8-6 win over Wayne in Game 5, earning their third title in five seasons. Sammy drove in the first run with an RBI single, while Wright’s second-inning grand slam gave Upper Darby a commanding 5-0 lead.
Veteran pitcher Kevin McGovern, a former Cardinals farmhand, held Wayne in check until the sixth inning when defensive errors opened the door for a six-run rally. Still, McGovern pitched a complete game, striking out nine and finishing the season undefeated (9-0) with a 0.58 ERA.
Offensively, Chase Ecker went 3-for-4 with two runs, Alex Burman added two hits and two runs, and Sam Wright scored three times. For Wayne, Alden Mathes went 3-for-3 with a double.
For Sammy Burman, the back-to-back championship was deeply personal:
“It’s the second title I’ve won with Alex, and Leo brought the energy on the bench. My dad runs the team with Dave Jerdon. It’s special because we talked about this all year, especially after I got home from Catholic University. I know how much it means to my dad.”
With another trophy in hand, the Burman family and Blue Sox have cemented themselves as one of the Delco League’s most dominant forces.
